In the year 2013 we were invited to submit a design proposal for the expansion of the Vice-Rectorship building and the Faculties of Medicine, Humanities and Business.
The call was for a project shaped like an amoeba in a place called “Las Antenas y San Miguelito” located next to the bank of a river that needed to be crossed to access the site.
The design called for a university library, a language centre for the humanities faculty, a lecture theatre, the medicine faculty and the business and accounting faculty.
The campus is structured in a linear manner linking the different buildings via walkways for pedestrian access.
The road traffic is structured by means of a ring road and two car parks at each end of the site.
The climatic conditions determine the orientation of the buildings and the need to search for materials and building systems that help to reduce energy demand in a passive manner, taking advantage of the sunlight in accordance with the specific uses of each building and with façades that are ventilated and closed to the most aggressive east-west orientations.
In the north-south orientations, the buildings open up by means of glass and textile mesh, visually permeable from the inside, enhancing the relationship with the campus gardens.
The interior courtyard gardens are designed to act as bioclimatic and meeting areas, promoting the natural generation of air currents to minimise the use of mechanical equipment and reduce the temperature of the indoor areas.
